We hate to ruin a beautiful vision for a tipi development, or turn away excited potential clients but we do sometimes have to say no.

If your site regularly enjoys howling gales, hurricane-force winds and the occasional biblical weather event, a tipi might not be for you. Because for all its clever engineering, a tipi is still, at heart, a tent.

But that's not to say they aren't sturdy! If you're investing in a permanent tipi for a pub garden, hotel, restaurant, wedding venue or visitor attraction, you’re creating much more than an attractive outdoor space.

Understanding wind performance

 

Wind performance depends on the complete structure, its configuration, how it is secured and the conditions it encounters. The distinctive conical shape of a tipi naturally interacts with wind differently from a conventional flat-sided structure. But shape alone isn't enough.

That's why The Tipi Company has commissioned detailed wind-loading calculations using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). This sophisticated analysis allows us to understand how different wind directions and speeds affect the structure and provides robust engineering data for the configurations we supply.

But there is an important distinction.

What a structure can technically withstand is not the same as the conditions in which it should be occupied.

Structural wind-loading figures represent engineering thresholds. They should never be interpreted as a single "safe wind speed" for an event or hospitality operation.

Our guidance therefore focuses on safe operational use, rather than promoting maximum structural limits.

Why wind gusts matter

When you're looking at a weather forecast, it's tempting to concentrate on the headline wind speed. In reality, wind gusts are the critical factor.

A forecast might show an average wind speed of 20 mph while predicting gusts exceeding 40 mph. Those sudden gusts create the additional stress, movement and risk that operators need to consider.

For that reason, we encourage clients to monitor both average wind speeds and, importantly, forecast gusts.

Our operational guidance follows a conservative approach aligned with recognised industry principles for temporary and demountable structures.

As conditions move beyond around 30 mph, particularly where gusts are present, they should be treated as adverse. Openings should be closed, the structure fully secured and operators should consider reducing occupancy, modifying plans or cancelling events.

As gusts approach approximately 36 mph, conditions become unsuitable for events and temporary closure is strongly recommended.

Beyond 40 mph, industry guidance generally recommends that temporary structures are not in use.

Designed for real-world hospitality

Permanent hospitality spaces need to perform in the real world, not just look beautiful on installation day.

A tipi on a sheltered hotel terrace faces very different conditions from one positioned on open farmland, an exposed hillside or a coastal site. Configuration matters too. Raised sides, fully secured sides, wind direction and linked structures can all affect wind loading.

That's why there isn't one universal wind figure that applies to every tipi in every situation.

Instead, we consider the structure, configuration and site together and can provide configuration-specific engineering information where required.

Secure anchorage matters

A well-engineered structure also depends on how effectively it is secured to the ground.

Different sites present different challenges. A pub lawn, paved courtyard and hotel terrace may each require a different approach.

The important principle is that the anchorage solution needs to be appropriate for the structure and its environment. The frame, connections and anchorage work together as a complete system.

This is particularly important when planning a permanent or long-term hospitality installation. Ground conditions, drainage, access, surrounding structures and exposure should all be considered early in the project rather than treating anchorage as an afterthought.

Weather management is part of good venue management

Engineering is only one part of creating a dependable outdoor venue.

Safe operation also relies on sensible weather monitoring and clear procedures for your team.

Before periods of adverse weather, operators should check that the structure is fully secured and all relevant openings are closed. Increased movement and noise can be expected as wind conditions worsen, while more severe conditions can also increase wear and the possibility of water ingress.

It's a simple approach that helps protect your guests, your team and your investment.
