Josh, Marketing Manager, Trentham Monkey Forest

The Brief

Trentham Monkey Forest is an adventure park designed for unforgettable family outings, offering a unique and immersive experience where visitors can walk amongst 140 free-ranging Barbary macaques. The park features a ¾ mile pathway that winds through an ancient Staffordshire Forest, allowing families to observe these monkeys in an environment that closely resembles their natural habitat.

Seeking to enhance the visitor experience, Trentham Monkey Forest decided to upgrade their picnic area, which was previously just a grassy space. The aim was to create a more inviting and distinctive area for families to relax and enjoy their picnics amidst the beautiful forest surroundings. Marketing Manager Josh recalled seeing one of our Tipis at Blakemere Village and was struck by its aesthetic appeal and functionality. Impressed by how the Tipi complemented the environment and added a unique touch to the area, Josh reached out to the Events Manager at Blakemere Village to gather more information about the Tipi’s supplier – The Tipi Company.

The Challenge

The goal was to provide visitors with a comfortable and inviting spot to relax and enjoy their meals while taking in the park’s beauty.

The chosen location presented challenges, as the ground was untouched, uneven, and required preparation before it could be utilised effectively. Rather than undergoing levelling work, the team opted to enlist the expertise of our Tipi fitters, who created a level, raised wooden base for the Tipis.

This approach not only addressed the uneven terrain but also provided a stable and secure foundation for the Tipis. The expert team constructed the wooden base, ensuring it was level and robust enough to anchor the Tipis securely to the ground. To enhance the functionality and aesthetics of the area, they extended the wooden base to create a deck around the front of the Tipis. This addition not only provided extra floor space but also featured a step leading up to the Tipis, offering easy access from the surrounding landscape.

The Design & Installation

Our experienced team worked closely with Trentham Monkey Forest to help guide them on the most suitable tipi formation for the site and their desired outcome. After a detailed measure of the site during the initial Complimentary Site Visit, a Big Hat Tipi was selected. To enhance the tipi further, the team chose to have the entire front of the tipi lifted and filled in with three giant Panoramic Windows to create a spacious, light-filled event space.

The Big Hat Tipi, that can accommodate up to 90 guests seated, was chosen for its flexibility – maximising the space available and creating the wow-factor. While the Panoramic Windows offer a unique feature that allows them to be unzipped and rolled up to seamlessly connect the indoor space with the surrounding natural environment outside.

Trentham Monkey Forest opted for a Mocha-coloured Big Hat canvas, which not only blended with the natural surroundings but also added a warm tone to the space. The addition of fairy lights on each pole created a cosy and magical atmosphere, making the picnic area spot for families to unwind after a day of exploring the park.

The final unique feature added to the formation was an extended decking at the front of the tipi to allow for free flow of guests inside and out – again maximising the number of people who can enjoy the space.
