The Brief
Rylands Farmhouse, a 150-year-old property nestled in the heart of Wilmslow, Cheshire, is known for its blend of rustic charm and modern elegance. While the farmhouse no longer functions as a working farm, its exposed wooden beams, traditional character, and breath-taking views of the Cheshire countryside make it a popular boutique hotel.
Looking to diversify their offering and make use of their underutilised outdoor space, the team at Rylands decided to create a wedding and events venue that would align with the farmhouse’s charm and character. They sought a solution that would maintain the rustic aesthetic of the property while offering a modern, stylish space for weddings and large gatherings.
The Challenge
The biggest challenge faced by Rylands Farmhouse was the uneven ground at the end of the property, which had a significant slope. This area was identified as the best location for the new events venue, but the terrain needed to be addressed before any structures could be installed. The team at Rylands wanted a solution that would create a level surface without compromising the natural beauty of the surrounding countryside.
To overcome the challenge of the uneven terrain, The Tipi Company’s installation team built a raised wooden platform to serve as the foundation for the Tipis. This decking provided a stable, level base for the two Big Hat Tipis and a catering tent, while also allowing space for a toilet block to be installed. The wooden platform not only solved the issue of the slope but also complemented the rustic aesthetics of the farmhouse, blending seamlessly with the surrounding countryside.
The Design & Installation
Rylands Farmhouse opted for two Big Hat Tipis, which were linked together to create a spacious yet intimate venue. These were paired with a catering tent to accommodate the needs of events and weddings. Additionally, the Enhancement Kit B, complete with wooden doors, was installed to provide a grand entrance to the venue, creating a welcoming atmosphere for guests.
To maintain the natural theme, wooden benches and tables were purchased for use during events, providing a comfortable seating area that matched the aesthetic of the Tipis. A wooden lighting display was installed at the entrance to the Tipis, adding to the warm and inviting feel of the venue. A rustic wooden bar was also added, providing a focal point for receptions and parties.
Theming
The wooden decking that surrounded the Tipis, along with the custom-built wooden toilet block, was designed by the team at Rylands to match the earthy tones of the Tipis. This attention to detail ensured that the venue remained in keeping with the rustic charm of the farmhouse, while offering modern amenities.
To make the space comfortable year-round, heaters were purchased to ensure the Tipis remained warm even during colder months, making the venue suitable for weddings and events throughout the year. The catering tent was fitted with fridges and other necessary equipment, allowing for full-service catering during events.
In 2022, Rylands Farmhouse officially opened the doors to its twin Big Hat Tipis. The venue can cater to wedding receptions of up to 100 seated guests and can accommodate up to 180 standing guests for more informal events, such as parties and corporate gatherings. The Tipis have provided Rylands Farmhouse with a unique selling point, offering a picturesque and versatile space for weddings and events that complements the boutique hotel’s rustic yet modern appeal.
