The Brief

22 Street Lane Nursery, located next to the picturesque Roundhay Park in Leeds, is an award-winning nursery offering high-quality early years education for children aged 1 month to 5 years. The nursery operates out of a beautifully renovated Victorian building, featuring spacious rooms and natural furnishings that encourage creativity and development. However, it’s their expansive garden that truly sets them apart, offering children the opportunity to learn and explore outdoors through hands-on play and discovery.

Understanding the value of outdoor education, the team at 22 Street Lane Nursery wanted to expand their garden’s functionality by introducing an outdoor classroom—something that would not only complement the natural environment but also inspire imaginative play and learning.

The Challenge

The challenge was to create a new outdoor learning environment that would blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings while maintaining the charm and functionality that the original Tipi had provided.

In 2016, 22 Street Lane Nursery began the process of transforming their garden space by purchasing a Baby Tipi in a sand colour from The Tipi Company. The Tipi quickly became a favourite among the children, offering a cosy, whimsical space for outdoor learning. However, as the nursery’s outdoor area continued to evolve, they sought to upgrade their Tipi to better match the newly renovated garden. They decided to replace the existing Baby Tipi with a new Forest Green Tipi, which would complement the greenery of the garden.

The Design & Installation

In 2023, 22 Street Lane Nursery introduced their new Forest Green Baby Tipi, a stunning addition that perfectly integrated with the natural colours of their garden. Along with the Baby Tipi, they also added a sand-coloured Little Hat Tipi to the centre of the garden in 2024. The Little Hat Tipi provides additional shelter and serves as a versatile space for outdoor play and special events, such as graduation ceremonies and family days.

Theming

The Baby Tipi was decorated with hanging plants and natural-coloured furniture, creating an inviting and educational environment for the children. The Tipis offered a safe and cosy space for outdoor learning, where children could participate in storytelling, imaginative play, and other educational activities in a beautiful, nature-inspired setting.

Since upgrading to the Forest Green Baby Tipi, 22 Street Lane Nursery has transformed its outdoor space into a magical learning environment that both staff and children adore. The children love the sense of adventure and discovery the Tipis provide, while the nursery team has found the Tipis to be a functional, charming addition to their garden.

The Tipis offer a natural, safe, and aesthetically pleasing solution for outdoor learning, while also providing the flexibility needed to host a range of activities. From day-to-day play to special events, the Tipis have quickly become a central part of the nursery’s outdoor education program.
